Today I had an epiphany driving into work. As an enthusiastic driver, a man that loves cars and hates the idea of not actually driving them anymore, I was taken aback by a strange new feeling of welcome autonomous vehicles to the roads. Many of you are now thinking, were you hit in the head one too many times as a child for such heretic words? I probably did, but I was perfectly lucid when I came to this conclusion. Here's how I see it playing out:

Initially autonomous cars will be restricted to autonomous operation on major freeways inside big cities. Essentially anything that is now an HOV lane will be converted. Operation outside of those lanes will still be manual driving.

As they become more ubiquitous someone will come up with an over the air standard that will cover entire cities. A bit after that point the manual car drivers will be subjected to single manual driving lanes and pushed out of numerous routes that will be auto only.

Eventually the standards will be rolled out to the connecting routes between cities and manually driven cars will solely be able to be operated in single lanes on nearly all major roads.

Manual driving will probably still be required once you get onto truly rural/mountain back roads, but much like the horse, the manually driven car will become a toy for the rich and a tool for those that still live privately away from large pockets of civilization.

It's probably better overall, but I hope working the bugs out takes long enough that I'm too old (or dead) to enjoy driving anymore.
